The Pulse and Practice of Hope in the Field of Becoming

Living Human Change

Volumes One & Two

by James L. Egbert

You’ve already begun.

What you encountered on the Home page was not an explanation.

It was orientation.

A way of recognizing that change is not only something happening around us.

It is something we live within.

Living Human Change begins there.

With the person inside the change.

Across the first two volumes of Hope²Change: A Cosmology of Hope and Human Becoming, the work moves from recognition to participation.

Volume One, The Pulse of Hope in the Field of Becoming, asks us to notice what human change feels like while it is happening.

Volume Two, The Practice of Hope in the Field of Becoming, asks how we might participate within that becoming.

One helps us recognize.

The other gives us ways to practice.

Neither offers a formula for managing change.

VOLUME ONE

The Pulse of Hope in the Field of Becoming

Living Human Change

Change is rarely experienced as a single moment.

More often, it unfolds in pulses—

felt before they are understood,
lived before they are named.

Some change arrives because we choose it.

Much of it does not.

Whether through work, family, health, loss, disruption, aging, transition, or uncertainty, many of the most consequential changes in a life begin as moments and slowly become conditions we must learn to live inside.

We do not encounter change from the outside.

We live inside it—

and it pulses within us.

Volume One names ten pulses that may become recognizable within the lived experience of change:

Event.
Reaction.
Realization.
Grief.
Delay.
Hope.
Action.
Agency.
Recovery.
Change.

They are not stages.

They do not form a staircase.

They overlap.

Repeat.

Return.

Different parts of a life may move through different pulses at the same time.

The Pulse Map is not something to complete.

It is something to recognize.

Within this field, hope does not appear as certainty, prediction, belief, or optimism.

Hope appears as orientation.

A quiet recognition that becoming is not over.

That movement is still possible.

Hope does not remove what has been lost.

It does not resolve uncertainty.

It does not tell us what comes next.

It allows continuation.

Hope is the hinge upon which human becoming turns.

VOLUME TWO

The Practice of Hope in the Field of Becoming

Living Human Change

Recognition matters.

But recognizing that we are living within change does not tell us how to live within it.

Volume Two begins there.

If Volume One asks:

What am I experiencing within change?

Volume Two asks:

How might I participate within what is becoming?

The practices are not steps.

They are not techniques for controlling an outcome.

They are gestures—ways of entering into relationship with ourselves, other people, the conditions around us, and what may be emerging.

Nine gestures form the practice:

Go to Ground.

Be the Museum Exhibit.

Echo.

Walk the Perimeter.

Stand at the River Lock.

Drop the Box.

Sit with Another.

Water Around You.

Choose the Lead Plank.

Each gesture invites a different kind of participation.

Sometimes participation means grounding ourselves.

Sometimes it means becoming visible to ourselves.

Sometimes it means listening for what returns.

Sometimes it means noticing the boundaries around us.

Sometimes it means allowing movement to occur differently.

Sometimes it means releasing the containers we have mistaken for reality.

Sometimes it means sitting with another person without needing to fix what they are living.

Sometimes it means tending the conditions around us.

And sometimes it means choosing what we will carry forward and placing the first plank toward what might become.

These are not instructions for producing change.

They are practices for living within it.

FROM PULSE TO PRACTICE

Together, the first two volumes establish a simple movement within Living Human Change:

Recognition before intervention.

Orientation before direction.

Participation without the promise of control.

Volume One helps us notice what is moving within us.

Volume Two invites us to participate within that movement.

The Field of Becoming remains larger than either.

It includes what has happened, what is happening, other people, relationships, institutions, history, circumstance, possibility, and what has not yet become visible.

We are always within the field.

Sometimes something within it rises into awareness.

A pulse.

A realization.

A question.

A possibility.

A threshold.

We may not control what appears.

But we may participate in what follows.

Hope orients us.

Participation is how we live within becoming.

Hope is not something you hold.

Hope holds you.

The field moves.

Awareness comes.

Language follows.

And becoming continues.
